Talk Event Takuya Nakao × Ryuji Nakamura × Soshi Matsunobe × Yukawa-Nakayasu Japanese architecture has developed as an abstract space where the material requirements of things (mono) intertwine with the bodily dimension of human behavior and experience (koto). Focusing on this multilayered dimensionality—traversing from one, two, and three dimensions into the fourth dimension—this talk engages art critic Takuya Nakao to unpack the abstract space that arises in the threshold between mono and koto.

As shifting natural light softens the contrast between light and shadow, the boundary between architecture and artwork blurs, allowing both to lean into and depend mutually upon one another. The works of Ryuji Nakamura and Soshi Matsunobe invert the traditional hierarchical relationship between figure and ground in architecture and art, bringing structural elements and fittings—once unconsciously consumed as visual background—into the foreground of perception.

Continuously updated through physical movement such as walking and sitting, the space of Zuiun-an serves as a threshold into a "four-dimensional abstract space" perceived only through diffuse awareness, liberated from a fixed, static gaze. From the dual perspectives of criticism and practice, we unravel a conceptual horizon where the materiality of mono intersects with the eventhood of koto.
