《 Narrative Gravity, Image Repulsion 》
Kano Nakamura × Masanori Mizuno TALK
How do we confront a work of art before it is reduced to existing language or narratives? In this talk, we welcome interface researcher Masanori Mizuno to explore the "cognition of images and narratives"—a dynamic that unfolds across the realms of production, criticism, and appreciation.
In Kano Nakamura’s Before the Tornado, a narrative of her experience in Hong Kong—unexpectedly passing through her mind during the creative process—is integrated as the final, defining touch that materializes the image. For Nakamura, whose conventional painting practice has excluded narrative elements, this represents a novel departure. Distinct from the practice of painting from a pre-established story, her approach preserves a generative "margin" within the image format, multiplying the layers of our cognition as if resisting any easy reduction of the work. At the same time, however, our perception is inevitably drawn into the gravitational pull of the emerging narrative.
Mizuno, on the other hand, eschews the practice of discussing an artwork through predetermined language. Instead, his critical practice centers on interacting with the work first, subsequently seeking out words that intimately correspond to that immediate cognitive experience. Confronted with the artwork, how does our gaze respond within the "time of perception" that resides in the interstices between image and verbalization? We invite you to join us as we aim to uncover the hidden capacity of images and deepen this inquiry.
