《 Grounded Lines / Lined Grounds 》
Ai Tanaka × Adam Takahashi TALK
Ai Tanaka has developed a unique painterly practice by transforming the "physical constraints" inherent in Japanese mineral pigments into catalysts for expression. Speaker Adam Takahashi observes that while her paintings initially appear articulated by grid, a closer view reveals a tactile quality akin to ridges in the earth, embedding a sense of natural movement—like the swaying of the wind—within their structural regularity.
Together with Takahashi, who focuses on the "tension between the autonomous behavior of materials and the artist’s agency," this talk will unravel the dynamic relationship between abstract order and organic fluctuation found in Tanaka’s oeuvre. Surveying a range of works from her primary paintings to her drawings, the speakers will engage in a multifaceted discussion on how the physical conditions of art materials impart meaning to a work.
After the talk, art manager Natsu Kashimoto will host a catered food gathering—a chance to connect, share, and reflect with the speakers and fellow guests. We warmly welcome your presence. Please feel free to join us.

Born in 1992 in Aichi, Japan. She received her M.F.A. from Aichi University of the Arts. Tanaka explores images that emerge through a recursive movement between illustration and drawing—modes of expression she views as similar yet fundamentally distinct. In her work, she foregrounds the complex relationship between constraint, practice, and the dynamics of self and other. Recent exhibitions include ‘Flow Motion’ at Second 2., Tokyo (2025), ‘Communal Ground’ at Aichil University of the Arts Satellite Gallery SA•KURA, Aichi (2025), ‘Mist World / Unbound’ at the Former Ochiishi Radio Station, Hokkaido (2024), ‘Reverse String’ at Echigo-Tsumari Satoyama Museum of Contemporary Art MonET, Niigata (2024), and ‘VOCA 2023: The Vision of Contemporary Art - Emerging Artists in Flat Works’ at Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo (2023).
