Artist Talk “Performative sculpture, or sculptural performance” 演じる彫刻、もしくは 彫刻としての演技
Zai Nomura
Zai Nomura challenges our existing notions of "presence and absence" through works that transform various materials into images, and then these images back into material form. The exhibition piece, 《Lost and Found》, exemplifies this by converting candies printed with photographs belonging to individuals with dementia into cotton candy, prompting us to re-examine memory by delivering the fading recollections of others to us.
For Nomura, who states, "the performer is also part of the work (medium)," performers are no exception to this process of transformation. The gestures of the performer, who hands the cotton candy to the visitor, are kept to an absolute minimum. This act, which renders the performer as a moving sculpture, prompts a unique engagement with the viewer.
This talk event will review Nomura's past works from a performative perspective, focusing on the "relationship between performance and sculpture" and the "relationship between the performer and the viewer." Unraveling his perspective and the instructions that underpin his delicate yet tense body of work can offer us a means to keep "irreplaceable existence" in our daily consciousness. We warmly invite you to attend.
