Workshop “𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙈𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨”
Tracing Memories is a rice-paper drawing workshop conducted by artist Chi L. Nguyễn, part of the public program for the exhibition 'Tender Recalls, Prospective Futures'.
In this hands-on session, participants are invited to draw or write and preserve personal memories onto rice paper with the artist. The event takes place at Cocoroom, a local community space in the Nishinari ward of Osaka. After the workshop, the rice paper artworks will be transformed into scrolls and exhibited as a communal installation at MaDo Gallery across the street.
The workshop takes inspiration from Nguyễn’s ongoing project 'Letters to My Father'. In her practice, rice paper is not just a surface. As tracing paper, it can layer personal memories, anecdotes, and familiar sights. And as a malleable material, it can be displayed flat or shaped into scrolls. Participants are invited to engage with this process—drawing, writing, or simply reflecting. Together, we will build a communal installation of rice paper scrolls, placing memories into the daily life of the neighborhood.
The workshop is part of 'Tender Recalls, Prospective Futures', an exhibition that explores the possibilities of memory recall, examining how our perceptions shift when we engage with the memories of others—whether familiar or previously foreign to our own experience. Works by Zai Nomura and Chi L. Nguyễn can be viewed just a few minutes away at SUCHSIZE and Ichinojuuniyon
The workshop is open to all, regardless of drawing experience or language spoken. You can share stories, draw quietly, or simply be part of the circle. Space is limited and reservation is required. We look forward to welcoming you.
